Cozumel, Mexico: Caribbean Soul, Mexican Heart
Ever since hurricane Wilma, locals say the beaches
are bigger and even more beautiful than before, plus the
coral reefs are world-class.
Where the locals go: When you walk into Guido's,
you'll find the locals in this restaurant's floral
backyard, overlooking the water, munching on pizzas,
savoring the catch of the day, and toasting the sunset
with a cerveza.
Local tipple: Although beer and margaritas are
the standard of this tiny island, locals like to combine
the two for a chelada, an iced combination of
fresh lime juice and beer, perfect to cool you off on
those sultry, hot days. Just make sure the rim of the
glass is salted!
Place we love even if it's touristy: Chankanaab
National Park, meaning "little sea" is the pride of the
islanders due to its beautiful land-locked sea covered
in botanical gardens. Be sure to get there before noon
for the best snorkeling and to avoid the tourists
getting off the cruise ships.
Break the bank dinner: The people at Pepe's Grill
love fire. What they don't grill in the kitchen, they'll
flambe at your table. Although steaks and lobsters are
Pepe's specialty, try the shrimp Bahamas, flambeed with
banana and pineapple in a curry sauce for something
truly tropical.
Get out of dodge: When you're driving to the
Mayan ruins of San Gervasio, it's not just about
destination, but the journey as well. The mysterious
road trip will lead you through a lush, iguana-filled
jungle, into the ceremonial center where the Mayans
gathered to pay homage to Ixchel, the goddess of love
and fertility. Needless to say, Ixchel is popular with
couples celebrating their honeymoon.
Where to blow a paycheck: From perfumes to local
spirits to sterling silver jewelry, locals and tourists
both agree that the department store Pama is the place
to go for the luxury items on their shopping lists for a
bargain price.
