Often considered the capital of the New South, Hotlanta's rich history and vibrant future juxtaposes Civil War sites and Civil Rights landmarks with the modern World of Coca-Cola and CNN Center.

Getting around: Navigate Atlanta's distinct neighborhoods--prestigious Buckhead, charming Virginia-Highland, and artsy Midtown, but bring a map because every other throughway is named Peachtree something--boulevard, street, avenue, road? you get the idea.

Local flavor: Fried green tomatoes are not just for fiction. Get some at Mary Mac's Tea Room along with fried okra and fried chicken. Wash them down with sweet tea, and top 'em all off with banana pudding or peach cobbler.

Place we love, even if it's touristy: Friday Jazz Night is every third Friday at the High Museum of Art, which showcases American, European, and African art. Admission is free every first Thursday, and it's a great place to chat up locals.

Get out of dodge: Just 16 miles east of downtown is Stone Mountain, home to the world's largest exposed granite, which includes a carving of Confederate figures. Hike 1.3 miles to the top, or hop on the summit skyride or scenic train.

History lesson: Tour the birth house, church, and gravesite of Dr. King, our nation's illustrious Civil Rights leader, at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Sweet Auburn.

Chill-out spot: Yearning for green space? At Piedmont Park in Midtown you can swim, roller blade, play baseball, grill, and even kick back on the grass.

Did we mention it's free? Centennial Park is the legacy of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Check out the Fountain of Rings, the world's largest interactive fountain.
